Grey Season’s farewell album, Out of the House into the Night, was recorded with previous collaborator, and Grammy award winning producer, Benny Grotto, at the newly created Mad Oak Studios in the band’s current hometown of Allston, MA, as well as at the acclaimed Q Division studios. Sonically, the record is an eclectic, alternative departure from the folk and blues driven Time Will Tell You Well. It includes everything from their standard folk ballad, to indie-rock and rock epic. With this change comes bassist Ian Jones taking lead on select tracks, and instruments never before used on a Grey Season record (accordion, synth, horns). Despite this departure, it remains distinctly Grey Season, and takes the band on a final sonic exploration before the members part ways with lead singer Jon Mills.
All of this comes on the heels of a fantastic year. 2015 included performances at SXSW, Bonnaroo, and Boston Calling, and a year marking over 300 performances together across greater New England and beyond. The band also released a fan only cover album, Undercover. This was all commemorated with nominations for Best Americana and Folk artist at the Boston Music Awards, and a great deal of support in general from the Boston community.
While the possibilities are endless going forward for the individual members, Grey Season will be taking a hiatus with their lead singer leaving. Some may explore solo projects, or convene for a newly named group effort. Certainly members Ben Burns and Chris “Gooch” Bloniarz will continue with their other project Honeysuckle.
We invite everyone to join Grey Season for their farewell and release show at Great Scott on Wednesday, April 6th. Lady Pills, The Dingo Babies, and a special featuring of Honeysuckle will round out the evening, with Out of the House into the Night available for physical purchase during and after the show. Anyone who pre-orders will be able to pick up their copy that night. Buying a ticket will be the only way to own a physical copy of the release.
Thank you to all the fans for 5 years of amazing support, and we hope you’ll follow along on Ian, Matt, Ben, and Chris's musical journeys going forward.
